Marlene Pechon-Motorcycle Transport

Marlene Pechon is a 40-year old married woman. She has five children and unfortunately, the twin babies inside her womb were aborted just recently for reasons she don't know. It was a indeed a heartbreak for Marlene and her husband, Jimmy, because they did not know that the six month fetus inside her womb were twins. Because of poverty and no enough nutritious food taken, she might have not given them proper nurture. However, Marlene had to move on with her life and her dreams for her other five children. She recently applied for a loan in ASHI amounting to PhP 48,000 in order to purchase a motorcycle in installment basis having a downpayment of Php20,000 and sidecar in cash payment of Php30,000 for her tricycle (motorcycle with sidecar attached to it) for her husband to drive.

Tricycle is one of the main means of transportation of people coming in and out of the village all throughout the municipality. Marlene's husband has been driving a tricycle for hire owned by other people for 20 years now. This is Marlene's daily source of income since her farming business which was her primary business since the beginning of her membership in ASHI, can only generate income every four months. With the increasing need of her family finances her husband and their farming business can hardly sustain, they have to increase their income. Having their own tricycle to be driven by her husband, the whole of his daily earnings will go to the family because he doesn't have to pay for the tricycle rental.

Having been a very good member of ASHI in the past nine years, showing a very good performance in payment, attendance and business, there would be no doubt that Marlene will be able to do better with her present loan applied. Her dreams of giving her children better education and better life motivates her to move on and make good in her business.

Blogathon #6.1-What is Kiva?

kiva's mission is to connect people through lending for the sake of alleviating poverty.

Kiva is the world's first person-to-person micro-lending website, empowering individuals to lend directly to unique entrepreneurs around the globe.

The people you see on Kiva's site are real individuals in need of funding - not marketing material. When you browse entrepreneurs' profiles on the site, choose someone to lend to, and then make a loan, you are helping a real person make great strides towards economic independence and improve life for themselves, their family, and their community. Throughout the course of the loan (usually 6-12 months), you can receive email journal updates and track repayments. Then, when you get your loan money back, you can relend to someone else in need.

Kiva partners with existing expert microfinance institutions. In doing so, we gain access to outstanding entrepreneurs from impoverished communities world-wide. Our partners are experts in choosing qualified entrepreneurs. That said, they are usually short on funds. Through Kiva, our partners upload their entrepreneur profiles directly to the site so you can lend to them. When you do, not only do you get a unique experience connecting to a specific entrepreneur on the other side of the planet, but our microfinance partners can do more of what they do, more efficiently.

Kiva provides a data-rich, transparent lending platform. We are constantly working to make the system more transparent to show how money flows throughout the entire cycle, and what effect it has on the people and institutions lending it, borrowing it, and managing it along the way. To do this, we are using the power of the internet to facilitate one-to-one connections that were previously prohibitively expensive. Child sponsorship has always been a high overhead business. Kiva creates a similar interpersonal connection at much lower costs due to the instant, inexpensive nature of internet delivery. The individuals featured on our website are real people who need a loan and are waiting for socially-minded individuals like you to lend them money.
